How to find a nutrition coach

A recipe for success

Your body requires a lot of fuel.

Amidst the demands of your personal and professional life, maintaining a balanced and nourishing diet can be a never-ending challenge. You need breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and proper hydration throughout every single day.

If you’re already feeling overwhelmed, don’t worry. A nutrition coach can bring structure and a goal-oriented approach to your eating habits. They provide insights beyond the “What” to eat and delve into the “Why” and “How” to make healthier choices. Together, you’ll work on a nutrition and wellness plan to increase your energy, boost your productivity, and harbor a better relationship with food — one satisfying meal at a time

What’s nutritional coaching?

A nutrition coach is a person trained (and trusted) to help you improve your dietary habits and overall nutrition. They guide, educate, and support you in making healthier nutritional choices to achieve health and wellness goals.

Nutrition coaching is a collaborative experience. Rather than having a coach dictating what you eat, you’ll work together to develop nutrition plans tailored to your needs and preferences, including any medical requirements you might have.

While many conversations may revolve around finding the right nutrition plan, that’s not all you’ll talk about. Your coach may want to examine your relationship with food and how it integrates with other behaviors, like mental health, work-life balance, and exercise habits. A nutrition coach program will help you build a relationship with food to encourage healthy daily decisions and habits, contributing to personal growth and well-being.

What is a nutrition coach’s background?

The educational requirements of nutritional coaches vary, so the best fit for you depends on what you need. Dietitians and nutritions generally have Bachelor’s degrees and licenses to practice in their states, but a general coaching certificate could be enough for nutrition coaches to practice. There are nutrition-coaching specific certifications coaches might complete, and many have backgrounds in nutrition, like four-year degrees. Do your research to ensure your coach has certifications that meet your needs or consider working with a reputable coaching platform.

8 benefits of nutrition coaching

You are what you eat. Food fuels your concentration, impacts the quality of your sleep, and plays a role in your mental health. But between professional and personal responsibilities, prioritizing your nutrition can be challenging.

Health and nutrition coaching can cultivate eating habits that enable you to be a better version of yourself, alongside these eight benefits.

1. Build a custom approach to nutrition

You’ve probably been on the receiving end of diet or nutrition advice from friends, family, and colleagues. Or maybe you’ve been tempted by a training program or fad diet that pops up on your social media feed.

While advice can be helpful, diet and nutrition is an incredibly personal and, for some, sensitive topics. The meal plan and training program that worked for an acquaintance or close friend may not necessarily work for you. Every body (and mind) is different and has different needs.

Effective nutrition plans consider every aspect of your life, from your medical history to your work schedule. Using this information as a foundation, nutrition coaches build tailored plans, prioritizing your unique nutrition goals and realistic lifestyle changes.

2. Form a better relationship with food

Embracing better nutrition doesn’t mean getting rid of foods that bring you joy or meticulously counting your micros and macros. The long-term goal is to examine bad eating habits and thoughtfully assess healthy habits that can boost your overall well-being.

Healthy eating coaching may introduce concepts like intuitive eating or mindful eating to help you remove judgment and stress from eating, honor your cravings, and enjoy food.

3. Support better sleeping and energy

The effects of food on sleep hygiene and energy are well documented. A 2020 meta-analysis points out direct links between adequate vitamins and nutrients consumption and quality sleep. Additionally, another 2020 meta-analysis compiled studies about the links between various types of food and energy to find that what you eat really does affect your sleep. But reviewing extensive evidence-based data to ensure you’re getting the most out of a balanced diet isn’t a simple task.

A professional dietitian or nutritionist can help you transform science into an actionable nutritional strategy, whether that’s designing meal plans, learning hydration hacks, or helping you write a balanced list for the grocery store. Then, with a nutrition coach, you can learn about the best foods to eat before bed or break down the science behind macronutrients, food groups, and supplements to understand a nutritionist or dietitian’s plan.

4. Accompany you through life transitions

Significant life transitions can alter your approach to daily nutrition. Embracing a career change at 40 or becoming a new parent might create stress, drastic changes to your schedule, or occupy too much mental space. Specialist coaching can help you keep your daily eating habits at the forefront, empowering you to approach the changes in your life with energy and a positive mood.

5. Promote long-term health and wellness

Ultimately, nutrition coaching is an investment in your long-term health and well-being. Working with a professional empowers you with knowledge, new skills, and support needed to improve your diet and overall lifestyle. The proactive approach to health helps you achieve your immediate goals and motivates you to adopt long-term habits for a healthy future.

6. Enhance mental clarity and focus

If you struggle to stay on task or fight procrastination, your nutrition may be a factor. Food fuels your concentration.  A well-balanced diet can improve your ability to make sound decisions, manage your time, and focus on your work. A nutrition coach can teach you to incorporate brain-boosting foods into your daily meals and tools to plan your day around healthy meals, whether that’s meal prepping or keeping the right snacks on hand.

7. Boost physical performance

Nutrition coaching isn’t just about eating well. It’s about fueling your body for optimal physical performance. A nutrition coach can design a custom plan that supports your fitness goals, helping you increase endurance, build muscle, and recover more effectively after exercise. Whether you want to run a marathon or simply get your weekly recommended exercise, a coach will help you turn food into the fuel you need.

8. Turn setbacks into learning lessons

Progress doesn’t always follow a linear line — there will always be setbacks. A lapse in your diet or difficulty reaching your nutrition goals can be deflating. An unexpected stall in your progress may feel so frustrating you may lose the internal motivation to continue at all.

A nutrition coach helps turn small failures into big lessons. For example, imagine you fell behind because of an intense work deadline that occupied your time and attention. Your coach can help you analyze the setback and develop strategies to overcome similar challenges, like practicing self-compassion to setbacks and learning meal planning techniques to stay on track on busy weeks.

And they can remind you that you don’t need to eat perfectly balanced meals each day to live a healthy lifestyle.

What to expect from nutrition coaching sessions

Similar to other coaching services, nutrition coaching offers a structured and goal-oriented experience to help you reach your dietary and health goals. Here’s what you can expect from a nutrition coaching experience:

  • A thorough assessment of your needs and goals to create a flexible action plan that reflects your dietary preferences, requirements, and current health condition
  • A holistic approach that interconnects food, health, and wellness
  • Educational sessions to learn about the science behind food and how it affects your body
  • Guidance to read nutrition information on food labels and make informed daily decisions
  • Suggestions for proper hydration, supplements, and meal schedules
  • Techniques to adjust meals based on body composition, hunger cues, and activity
  • Regular check-ins to discuss progress, behavioral changes, and necessary adjustments
  • Support tracking food quality, hunger, digestion, hormone health, sleep, and stress to ensure your body is at its peak performance

Approaches will vary from one coach to the next, but choosing a coach that makes you feel comfortable and motivated to get the best out of your experience is vital.

How to find a nutrition coach

Finding the right nutrition coach is about more than evaluating know-how and expertise. If you don’t click with your coach, you won’t fully invest in the experience. Finding a coach you connect with can motivate you to make impactful lifestyle changes. Here’s how to find the right match:

  • Define your goals: Coaches are skilled at asking you thought-provoking questions to dig deeper into your goals and motivations. But it’s still a good idea to do some preliminary work on your own. Think about your specific dietary goals, like weight management, nutrition counseling, or general wellness. This will help you sort through different coaches based on their areas of expertise.
  • Identify your needs: Consider all the practical factors, such as availability, location, and online options. If your schedule demands more flexibility or you prefer remote coaching, search for online nutrition coaching options.
  • Choose a platform: Look out for certified nutrition coaches with relevant experience to ensure accurate and evidence-based guidance. If your specific needs require a coach with experience in areas such as eating disorders or specific medical conditions, prioritize finding someone with expertise in those areas. Choosing a reputable coaching platform like BetterUp means your coach is already certified and experienced in the field.
  • See if you’re a good fit: At BetterUp, we use a Whole Person assessment to recommend coaches who can help you, based on your needs. And if you don’t click with your first choice, you can test different coaches until you find the right fit.

A recipe for success

Food should be a source of enjoyment, not stress. But with so much on your plate, it’s easy to load up on food that throws you out of balance.

A nutrition coach can help guide you to make every meal a nourishing source of satisfaction. They equip you with the tools, knowledge, and support to savor the most of your meals. You’ll be on your way to a healthier, happier you — one bite at a time.
